A scientific/ technological development





One big technological advancement was the Hoover dam; the hoover dam creates hydroelectric power and supplies drinking water to cities near it. Another development was that Radium was the first element to be made synthetically. Also better quality television for them it was considered high quality, the antenna was invented.  In addition the 1936 Olympics were the first to be televised. The most impressive camera used at the Olympic is called “Fernsehkanonen” Moreover Canada started broadcasting radio Inge Lehmann argued that the earth interior was solid.  On June 29th the first controllable helicopter was tested.  They being to show fronts and isolines on weather maps.  Keynes book “The General Theory of Employment, interest and money” was published.

Cultural (artistic) development



Cultural and artistic developments that happened in 1936. In January 15 the first building completely made with glass was built in Ohio. On February the phantom made his first appearance in newspapers. Mississippi’s first permanent rodeo was built. Also Television was becoming a big thing. BBC creates the first regular television service. In addition the CBC begins to broadcast radio in Canada. On November 23, 1936 the first Life Magazine was published. In addition there was an art competition in the 1936 summer Olympics, they displayed about 700 works of art from 22 different countries.Also on October  On November 30th the crystal palace was destroyed in London.

Political Events in the Western world



In the Western world not as much happened but in Japan some politicians were killed on February 26. They were trying to get rid of Japans imperial government. In addition the emperor orders the army to arrest 123 conspirators in Tokyo government offices and 19 are executed, also the Prime minister of Japan steps down and is replaced. On April 19 1936 the Arabs revolt against the British government. Ethiopia was invaded by Italy in May 7th. The Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1936 was signed, it was signed by the United Kingdom and Egypt to keep an alliance between the two. The United Kingdom had to withdraw all its troops from Egypt and they would also train the Egyptian troops.

Polital events in the eastern world



In 1936 there were many political events occurring throughout the eastern world on January 20th George V of Britten dies leaving the throne to Edward VIII. In March 7th Nazi Germany violates the Treaty of Versailles, by entering the Rhineland.  In March of 1936 the Great Depression occurred nationwide and unemployment rates were really high.  Also the Hoover Dam was completed, the Hoover dam helped with the economy because it was a big projected and it employed a huge number of men. In addition Bruno Hauptman is executed in New Jersey because he was convicted of killing and kidnaping Charles Lindbergh III on April 3rd. And on July of 1936 the Spanish civil war was being fought in Spain and it lasted about 2 years.  Later on November 3rd, 1936 were the United States Presidential elections. Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected winning both the popular vote and the electoral vote.  Germany, Italy, and Japan formed an alliance.

1936 Olympic Games


In 1931 the International Olympic Committee awarded the 1936 Olympics to Berlin before Hitler was in power.  The Olympic Games took place in Berlin, Germany, they were also knows as the Nazi Olympics. These games were the first ones televised. In addition basketball, field handball, and canoeing also made their first appearce at the games. The Berlin games was also the first to introduce the torch relay In 1933 a policy was was established in all German athletic organizations “Non-Aryans"—Jewish or part-Jewish and Romani (Gypsy) athletes—were systematically excluded from German sports facilities and associations.”( www.ushmm.org). People tried to boycott the games, but the boycott movement failed. The 1936 games were a turning point since they were in Berlin and Hitler was in power. Hitler used the games as propaganda and promote Third Reich. Hitler also wanted to prove that they were the superior race, but Jessie Owens an African-American sprinter and long jumper proved him wrong. He became a legend because of his achievements in the 1936 Olympics; He won four gold medals and broke five world records.
